Artificial intelligence (AI) is an umbrella term for technologies that enable machines to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence. This includes learning, reasoning, problem-solving, perception and language processing.
The History of AI
The concept of AI has existed since the 1950s, when Alan Turing asked the famous question: "Can machines think?" Since then, the field has made enormous leaps, particularly through the rise of deep learning and the availability of large amounts of data.
Machine Learning vs. Deep Learning
Machine learning is a subset of AI where algorithms learn patterns from data without being explicitly programmed. Deep learning goes a step further and uses neural networks with multiple layers to recognise complex patterns.
Narrow AI vs. General AI
The AI we use today is "narrow AI" — systems that excel at one specific task, such as image recognition or language processing. "General AI", which matches human intelligence in all respects, does not yet exist.
AI in Practice
In business, AI is used for customer service (chatbots), data analysis, process automation, predictive analytics and content creation. The application possibilities grow daily.
The Future
AI will become increasingly integrated into our daily lives and work. The key for businesses is to start understanding and applying AI now, so they are prepared for the future.
